Presentations from UEF Tech Meeting, Nov 2002University Executive Forum Tech Meeting At the November 2002 UEF technical leads meeting, a group of over 30 Mac system administrators gathered to discuss many issues surrounding Mac OS X lab deployment. Most of the presentations were captured on video so they could be shared here. Our thanks to Apple for hosting our meeting and arranging the video taping services!

Installation ToolsApple Software Restore UtilityThe presentation describes different ways to use the command-line version
of the ASR utility to clone volumes and restore disk images to lab machines. Carbon Copy ClonerThe author of Carbon Copy Cloner discusses the new features added in
version 2.0 of the utility. Login and Logout HooksA cookbook on what Login and Logout Hooks are, how to enable them, and
what tools are available for them. File System Maintenance ToolsRsyncX v1.7d Package ToolsRsyncX, RsyncXCD, and the RsyncX Package Tools allow you to perform
a wide range of file operations - from simple file, folder, or hard drive
local backups to remote administration of file systems for Mac OS X.
RsyncX is an enhanced version of the command line tool rsync, which is
supported on a wide variety of UNIX platforms, and win32 machines as
well. Radmind - Mac OS X File System MaintenanceRadmind is a suite of Unix command line tools for remote administration
of file systems for Mac OS X and other Unix systems. This presentation
gives a overview of the tools, the process of using the tools, terms,
execution and status customizations, tips & tricks. Radmind - U of U Customization DetailsCustomization details including multiple examples of executing radmind
at startup, login, logout, manually, and scheduled with perl, shell and
AppleScripts scripts. Also includes details on customizing login panel

Details" pdf above. Last updated 11-21-2002. Open Directory IntegrationOpen DirectoryAn introduction into the directory services built into Mac OS X. This
session gives an overview of all the services and capabilities included
with Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server. iPlanet Directory Server IntegrationThis is a success story about how Mac OS X has been able to leverage
an existing iPlanet directory infrastructure for lab login and authorization
information. Integration with Active Directory and eDirectoryA detailed look at the integration of Mac OS X with Microsoft Active
Directory and Novell eDirectory using their LDAP interfaces. Lab EnvironmentsWorkgroup ManagerA look at the Managed Client for X (MCX) environment and the interface
to control it, Workgroup Manager. MCX allows an administrator to control
user access to settings, printers, media, applications, and more. KerberosA short introduction to Kerberos followed by a description of the Kerberos
support built into Mac OS X 10.1 and 10.2. Network Home DirectoriesMac OS X provides a separate home directory for each user. Learn some
of the benefits of storing those home directories on a central network-based
file server. Specific examples discussed include Apple's support of AFP
and an open-source implementation of OpenAFS. |
